Church and Society Committee
The Church
and Society Committee educates and advocates about issues of local,
national, and international concern. A recent showing of the movie, "The
Harvest" which focuses on the lives of children and their families who
work in the fields growing and harvesting food for our tables, is just
one example.
In addition to sponsoring such an event, the Church
and Society Committee has had guests from the greater community come to
discuss local issues, such as conditions of housing for local farm
workers, migrant children's health issues, and local language issues.
The Church and Society Committee learned, for example, that many migrant
people in this area do not speak Spanish--considered the dominant second
language here--but Mixteco or Zapoteco, languages common to the Oaxaca
area in southern Mexico. Both Mixteco and Zapoteco have more than 70
dialects each. These languages (and dialects) are not mutually
intelligible, nor are there many who are able to translate them into
English in this area.
