Write Start Backpack Project

This is what we did LAST YEAR--our goal was 100 of each item; What can we do THIS YEAR?
This year's Backpack Packing Party is Saturday, August 13th!

On Saturday, August 14, 2010, 17 people came to assemble backpacks for the Write Start Backpack Project under the auspices of the Students in Transition Department at the Santa Cruz County of Education.

Last year sixty-four plus students in Santa Cruz County benefited from this generosity.

    Here's what's needed:
  • packages of binder paper
  • rulers
  • 2 inch binders
  • spiral notebooks
  • new backpacks--NOT red or royal blue, no chains or other gang insignia
  • colored pencils
  • regular pencils (Ticonderoga are the best.)
  • black or blue pens
  • 16 pack crayons
  • calclulators--they can be basic ones, not the high tech ones
  • Spanish-English dictionaries

It's a lot of stuff, and if people don't want to do the shopping themselves for these school supplies, checks to help cover the expense for these supplies can be made out to Aptos UMC, and we will do the shopping for you before the July 23red Backpack Packing event.
Last year the Back-to-School sales at Staples, Costco, etc. started in July. That's the time to do this shopping!
Last year many donated money to this project. Many others donated time.

TIME, TALENT, TREASURE all came together for a great cause. Last year we raised $1.624 in cash and that was fantastic.

The best estimate of the total value of all the money and supplies donated last year came to $2,363.28. Many homeless and low-income students in Santa Cruz County got the school supplies they wouldn't otherwise have had for this school year without the support of this congregation.
